History of Poker Chips
These little colored discs are a pretty new invention.
I know, it doesn’t seem like that. But in the 19th century, they didn’t exist.
People desperately needed things such as chips but they never would’ve thought of them out of the blue.
First and foremost, people started with nuggets made of gold and gold dust.
This ‘trend’ was started by Gus Hansens and Phil Hellmuth but because not every poker player had the ability to afford himself such gold pieces, this was quickly forgotten and the poker game needed something that is more suitable.
That’s why people started bringing pieces of ivory, clay and all kinds of bones.
Now, this was something else.
Casinos started playing with these kinds of items too but quickly started to mark them with all kinds of symbols and colors, just in case for scammers.
This idea was great until, in the late 1800s, the companies got an idea; to start making real chips.
This was only the beginning of the world-known casino symbols of today.
As usual, they are marked with the classic casino suits (heart, diamond, spade, club) in various colors.
They depend on the casino’s theme and each one of them has a different value (for example, the white one is worth only one dollar).
They also have stamps, according to their casino owner.
What Are They Made of Today?
As I previously mentioned, in the past, the poker chips were made out of clay.
That’s not the case with today’s chips as we know them, though.
The chips are mainly made out of clay BUT that material is mixed with a composite one so they can last longer and look better.
There are also porcelain ones, but they are more suitable for home play casinos.
The casino world is constantly changing, and so are all the elements in it.
The poker chips had a huge upgrade from 200 years ago and they are still changing, even today.
Who knows what the future may bring us?
